We care
for the planet
At Medichem, we are committed to a responsible production and consumption model. That is why the Circular Economy model has been an integral part of our operations across all process stages, departments, and sites. We have already incorporated green chemistry principles to minimize environmental impact at the molecular level, applying 9 out of the 12 principles. We use 16% renewable raw materials and have reused over 750t of solvent annually.
Carbon reduction goals and renewable energy initiatives
Carbon emissions
reduction
Medichem is dedicated to minimizing our environmental impact. We measure our carbon footprint across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, We have reduced our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 46% (vs 2021). Additionally, we have calculated our carbon footprint up to Scope 3 yearly since 2022.
Emission reduction targets
We set global short-term science-based emission reduction targets, following the criteria of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This defines the decarbonisation pathways needed to comply with the Paris Agreement, seeking to limit the increase in global tempe rature to less than 2°C and, preferably, to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
- Medichem is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 51.84% by 2030, using 2021 as the base year.
- Medichem is also committed to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25.0% by 2030, using 2022 as the base year.
Renewable
energies
Medichem is taking concrete steps to promotes energy efficiency, increases renewable energy use, and supports emission reduction initiatives. From installing solar panels and providing electric charging points to setting ambitious energy reduction targets, we’re committed to making a difference.
Our goal is 29% of global energy consumption comes from renewable sources, thanks to the procurement of 100% renewable origin-certified electricity at Medichem Spain and the installation of solar panels at Medichem Spain and Combino Pharm. In Celrà, additional solar panels have been installed, bringing the total area covered by solar panels to 2,831 m² for self-consumption of electricity. In Combino Pharm Malta, 1,827 m² of solar panels have been installed for self-consumption of electricity.
Sustainable
mobility
Medichem has drafted a sustainable mobility whose main objective is to reduce GHG emissions, monitor and set targets to reduce GHG emissions from commuting and business travel included in scope 3 of the company’s carbon footprint.
At Medichem Spain, we have allocated two car-sharing spaces, joined a car-sharing app, and installed two new charging points, bringing the total to six for cars and two for motorcycles or electric scooters.
We are replacing conventional fuel-dependent vehicles with eco-friendly cars while providing electric charging points to support sustainable mobility.
Progress in waste reduction, water conservation, and resource efficiency
Water is a precious resource, and at Medichem, we’re committed to using it responsibly. We’re implementing a range of initiatives to reduce our water consumption, improve the quality of our wastewater discharge, and promote a culture of water conservation among our employees. These initiatives include installing water-saving shower buttons, upgrading our cooling systems (including modifying the reactor cooling system), and implementing digital flow meters to precisely monitor water consumption. We are also engaging our employees in awareness campaigns to drive further reductions in water use.

Reduce water consumption
We have achieved a significant reduction in water consumption, with a global decrease of 18% (vs.2021). In our Celrà manufacturing plant, the reduction is even more substantial, reaching 35% (vs.2021).
